CitronCitron

One of the Four Species gathered since ancient times to observe the festival of Sukkot, citron symbolized female fertility. In Judaism, citron was protective of pregnant women, especially if the citron had first been used ritually; this is interesting in that in Sumatra, the placenta of a newborn was buried in a ritual way and the stone covering its burial hole was sprinkled with citron to protect it. In the Jewish book of talismanic magic, Sefer Raziel, the citron is connected with purification in amulet-making. The protective aspect of citron is illustrated in stories from ancient Rome of folks thrown to the lions who were not attacked after having consumed citron (other animals generally hate citrus). It is connected with Virgo in the Zodiac, and according to Arthur Waite, it is part of a ritual for locating gold (The Gold-Finding Hen in his heavily plagiarized Book of Ceremonial Magic). In Tibetan mythology, citon is connected to the spirit Jambhala and represents wealth and fertility. Although most of us would consider citron a Sun herb, Agrippa connected it to Mercury, since that planet is associated with fragrant peels.  This essential oil is cold-pressed from the peel of Citrus medica in Sicily. It's a good idea to store citrus oils in the fridge (let come to room temp before opening) or use them relatively quickly, like within 6 months. Top

Combining With Other Essential Oils

The scent of citron essential oil is a bit sweeter on the one hand and also a bit more flowery than the other citruses, which makes it especially nice in oils that use flowery topnotes. It is not as candy-like as lemongrass can be. It makes a nice change in blending from bergamot. It blends well with bay leaf, basil, blood orange, bois de rose, cardamom, cassie, clary sage, clove, coriander, cubeb, cumin, elemi, frankincense, galbanum, geranium, gingergrass, grapefruit, hay, jasmine, labdanum, lavender, lemon, lime, myrtle, neroli, patchouli, petitgrain, rose, sandalwood, tonka bean, and vanilla.
