small acorus gram Japanese calamus
Acorus gramineus

This is a smaller, Japanese brother of Acorus calamus and likewise a Sun plant. An old plant family, the Acorus are the last of the single-leaved plants from the time before humans appeared on Earth. Gramineus contains much less essential oil than calamus, but its essential oil has 50% more asarone than calamus's does. It is used in the Phillipines for rheumatism and memory problems. In Korea, it is an ingredient in a type of moonshine called Immortals' Booze. Research in China has shown the essential oil in this rhizome to be sedating and neuroprotectant, and this magick herb is also thought to repel evil spirits.
