Gum Ammoniac
Dorema ammoniacum
This resin is produced when the plant is stung by a beetle. It was used as incense in the Libyan Temple of Jupiter (in the form of Zeus-Ammon), which makes it generally good for protection and for honoring father deities. Agrippa recommends it as an ingredient in Mars suffumigations. Scribes prepare for gilding with this gum. It is also known as ammoniacum; it has nothing to do with ammonia or with sal ammoniac.
