This resin is produced when the plant is stung by a beetle. It was used as incense in the Temple of Jupiter (which makes it generally good for protection) and is an ingredient in suffumigations listed in some grimoires and in Solomonic magick. Since ancient times, it has been part of botanical medicine and used against bronchitis, as a plaster on lesions caused by plague, and as a mild stimulant. Scribes prepare for gilding with this gum (how to use gum ammoniac for gilding). It has nothing to do with ammonia.
