Cemetery Moon
Oil I've long wanted to create an
oil to evoke the sort of love and revenge work that magic
workers of late antiquity conducted in cemeteries. These witches
and magicians appealed to Hekate but also Apollo and Aphrodite
for help in their workings. I wanted to capture what it might
have been like to do such work and also to create an oil that
would help with cemetery workings today. The scents of
evergreens, traditionally associated with cemeteries on account
of the long-lasting nature of their wood and the fact that their
leaves do not drop, form the backbone of this oil, with funerary
Hekatean cypress and solar (and so Apollo-connected) cedar
joined with black spruce, silver fir,
and forest pine. The scent of freshly dug earth is there in
galbanum, representing the connection to the Underworld always
made in such magic, and a touch of green leafiness represents
the fertility of spellwork. I also included a little whiff of an antique burnt distillation of frankincense to represent
the distant fires of Hekate at the crossroads. Use this oil for
cemetery work, for honoring Hekate, for binding love spells
and for revenge.
