Oil for Hermes In
addition to the Hermes' Favor oil, which is really a luck oil,
I was asked to make a devotional oil for Hermes. I was happy
to do so, since he is one of my most loved deities. Saffron
was the herb of choice for honoring Hermes in ancient Greece,
perhaps because it grows in meadows where the herds he also
watched over grazed. But the story is that the saffron
crocus grew from the drops of blood of Krokos, a mortal young
man whom Hermes loved and whom he accidentally killed while
playing discus. Finding herbs that go with saffron and that
would fit this deity was not easy. I chose fruity but hot pink
pepper, warming turmeric, spicy ginger, cardamom, allspice,
and more. The result is a rich and pleasantly warm oil that
honors him and that can be made part of rituals asking Hermes
to guide the souls of the dead. It can also be used to honor a lost beloved.
