Oil of Pluto
I know what you're saying--why make an oil for a planet
that is not a planet anymore? Because folks are still working with
this planet's influence, and because it has a lot to teach us. Pluto
rules over death and resurrection and the sort of radical change
in consciousness that is sometimes symbolized by those terms (ego-death,
for instance). I started with the idea of earth, from which we come
and to which we return, the representative of the Underworld and
holder of the secrets Pluto can help us learn. Galbanum evokes the
scent of freshly turned soil. I added some mosses and tree
balsams to deepen the earthy and cold associations (because Pluto is cold), some opoponax, that rarer and more refined version of myrrh,
to stand for the spiritual aspect of the Underworld, and cypress, the tree of choice for
funerary objects because its durability represents immortality and
resurrection. Storax, which to me always has both a
spiciness and an outdoor, dark of night, coldness and dryness, gives the scent depth
(punful reference intended), and the oil has a tinge of the smokiness
of a room in which incense has just been burning. This oil was a
challenge to create, but I think it came out well and will help
greatly with your Pluto work.
