This salvia originates in Brazil, where it gets over four feet tall. 'Bonfire' is the tallest of the cultivated S. splendens and so is closer to its wild ancestors than most types. It is often used for smudging. The flowers contain monardin, which is also present in Monarda didyma, Bee Balm, and the leaves contain the planetary metal for Jupiter, tin. This big, bold plant is quite Jovian. Some people tuck a quid of its leaves under their tongue for relaxation or to aid in meditation. Most herbalists consider sage leaves best if harvested before the plant blooms. The red flowers of this member of the mint family look great mixed with marigolds.
