Chemical-free Charcoal This bamboo charcoal comes from Japan, where incense is both an art and an important spiritual practice. Even though it has no saltpetre or chemicals in it, it lights well - just hold it in the flame for 30 seconds. I find lighting it on a gas burner works much faster than using a candle flame. Get a goodly portion of it red before putting the incense on. Don't bury the sides in the sand or ash so that it has plenty of oxygen for combustion. It is completely scentless and much denser than self-lighting charcoal, so it lasts longer. It comes by the box instead of by the roll. The medium is the size of the regular self-lighting. Medium and small have the same total amount of charcoal, just different sized pieces. Chopsticks or sugar tongs make good charcoal manipulators. |
