Whole Fresh & Dried European Mandrake Roots SOLD OUT I grew these black mandrake roots myself, starting them from seeds Samhain 2008 and harvesting them Samhain 2010. They have been cleaned, and two of them have been dried. The fresh roots should be stored immediately upon receipt in alcohol or dried; they will mold and rot like any vegetable if they are not preserved in some way. The dried roots need no further treatment and are in the form that a mandrake mannikin (household/family protector) would have taken, but they are delicate, so handle gently. Such a root was wrapped in silk and anointed with a drop of wine periodically, during which time it was asked for favors. It was usually kept in a wooden "coffin," often with a picture of a hanged man or a gibbet on the front, due to the folk association of mandrake with hanged men (which I believe is just another indication of its connection to the Underworld). You can't grow another plant from the dried roots; if the fresh roots are not too worn from being out of the ground, you MIGHT be able to grow them on, but I am not selling them as live plants but as fresh roots. I strongly suggest you put the fresh roots in alcohol immediately when you get them. That way you can preserve them, look upon their beauty whenever you'd like, and use the alcohol for adding real mandrake essence to whatever magical items you are working on. Do not ingest--these babies are poisonous. Click on the pictures to see nice big photos. I won't have roots again until next year, but I hope to have small live mandrake plants in the spring (click here to be notified when live mandrake plants are ready).
