Oil
for Exu
A while ago, a customer
asked me to make oils and incenses for Exu and Pomba Gira. Although I
was not very familiar with the latter (I had bought de Frisvold's book
on her but hadn't read it yet), I felt some connection to Exu on
account of a series of dreams I'd had some years ago. Exu as manfested
in Kimbanda (Quimbanda) is found at the crossroads and is a
trickster/teacher/master of magic. He demands much of his followers, in
particular, self-knowledge and self-mastery (IOW, no bs allowed with
him). The customer and I worked together to come up with possible
ingredients for the oils and incense, and then I developed formulae
based on this information, practice, and intuition. The magic oil for
Exu took me the longest of all the four items. It took a number of
versions and tinkering before I felt that I got it right. I began with
a base of coffee and tobacco, both important for honoring this powerful
spirit. I added the characteristic warmth connected with his Fire
aspects in the form of black pepper, cinnamon, and cloves, and
sweetened it with hone. A few more tweaks brought this oil together.
